In case of an injury involving the face, mouth, or teeth you should first contact your family dentist or an EMERGENCY ROOM to care for any lacerations or loose teeth. After needed x-rays or treatment, contact us for any necessary appliance repair.
True orthodontic emergencies are very rare, but when they do occur we are available to you.
As a general rule, you should call the office when you experience severe pain or when you have a painful appliance problem that you can’t take care of yourself. We will set up a time to resolve the condition.
After routine business hours, call the office at 330.650.0880 and you will be directed how to contact the doctor or a clinical staff member.
Injuries

When Problems Arise
Although more that 80% of our patients go through treatment without ever having a problem arise, if you need us we have several times each day set aside to accommodate you. Please call the office at 330.650.0880 and we will be happy to set up an appointment.
It is very important to let us know if you have a loose or broken bracket or appliance even if you should have an appointment already scheduled. To prevent a longer time wearing braces, try to avoid breakages and be sure to call immediately should a breakage occur.
Below are common problems which can be addressed at home after office hours or until you reach us.
Loose or Poking Wires
If a wire causes irritation, push the wire away from the area using the eraser end of a pencil or a Q-Tip. If the wire cannot be tucked away, cover the end of the wire with a small piece of wax, until you can see us for an adjustment. Call our office for a mutually convenient time to fix the “poker” wire.
If the main wire has come out of the tube on your back tooth, attempt to reinsert the wire with a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers. If the wire is not sticking you, place a piece of wax over the area. As a last resort, if you cannot come into our office, the wire can be cut with a small wire cutter or nail clipper close to the back of the last brace.
Loose or Broken Brackets
Loose brackets will delay your treatment time. A loose bracket means this tooth is now no longer in treatment. The sooner the appointment, the sooner the tooth is back with the others in treatment.
Repairing loose brackets requires additional attention at your appointment. Notifying us in advance allows the office to prepare for additional attention to solve your problem. Without prior notification, it is possible we may have to reschedule your appointment to respect your allotted time as well as other patient’s scheduled appointment times.
Clean the tooth underneath the bracket while waiting for it to be repaired. The bracket usually remains connected to the main wire. Tweezers can be used to re-position the bracket if it flips around the wire and becomes a source of irritation or wax can be used to keep the bracket in place.
Loose Appliances
If your appliance is poking you, place wax on the offending part of your appliance. Call us to have it adjusted for comfort. Please try not to remove it yourself.
